Steve Braithwaite - Web Designer

I have been building websites for many years, long before I built the Big Banana Car.

My area of expertise is SEO (Search Engine Optimization) which is undoubtedly the most critical part of any website.

If you need a website call me even if you only want advice on how to SEO your current site yourself.

Below are the 5 steps needed to build a great website.

This is a graphic that shows the 5 steps in building a great website Step 1 Keywords Step 2 Collect Assets Step 3 Webhosting Step 4 Build site

Step one in building a great website - KeywordsThis is the single most important part of building a website and yet it's often the most overlooked.
Everything on your website will be built with Keywords in mind.
Everything.

Do this.

Imagine that someone has just moved to town and has never heard of you or your business but they want what you sell.

What would they type into Google?

Don't get confused between keywords and buzzwords. Your business will have many interesting and important buzzwords, and we can certainly optimize for those but they are often not words that people would use when doing a Google search.

Include word variations. Texas and TX is a simple example but your business might have more useful examples. Also think of words that are commonly spelled incorrectly.

We work on the keywords together.

Step two in building a great website - Collect AssetsNow give some thought to the colors, layout and look you want for your website.
If there is a particular website you like and want to use that as a template make a note of the URL.

It's always good to include a photograph of a real person on the front page of your site. Preferably a photo of you but if not anybody will work. We don't realize it but we respond much more favorably to photographs of smiling people.

Look for photographs that you own the rights to and start thinking about the wording of the various parts of your site. Make sure to include the keywords we identified in Step 1.

You will do most of this part but I will help with the copy.

Step three in building a great website - WebhostingOnce you have decided on your keywords and have started getting all your photos and text together it's time to sign up for web hosting.

Most webhosting companies offer everything you might need for a decent size website but there some that offer a very attractive low monthly cost but include very limited services so be careful.

You will want at least two domain names.

One will be for your business cards and any advertising and will be something like YourBusinessName.com . However, this will simply be a re-direct to your real domain name which will be something like Keyword-Keyword-Keyword.com
This is super crucial for your SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

I am connected to the webhosting company GalaxyGig.com and use them exclusively. Their Business Plan is probably more than enough for most websites and their control panel is very easy to use if you want to add email addresses etc later on.

You sign up for the webhosting and then give me the login details.

Step four in building a great website is to - Build a great websiteThe most important thing in building a website is still SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Making sure your site ranks well in Google search results. Today however there is another important issue and that is making a website responsive.

Responsive means that your site is built in such a way that it displays correctly on all the different screens that view it from a large desktop monitor to a small cell phone screen and everything in between.

I do this part.

However, here is the best bit.

Once your site is built you can edit it yourself directly through your browser!

Step five in building a great website - Monitor the site when finishedThis is by no means crucial to begin with but can still be a fun and useful tool.

If you just want to get an idea of the number of people who visit your site and where they come from I suggest using StatCounter.com.

If you want a more in depth look at the traffic your site receives you will want to use Google Analytics.

Both are free to use however, Google Analytics has a much steeper learning curve.

I add the necessary code to your site and then you check how your site is doing every now and again.
